Should You Drink Water Before, During or After Yoga? A Hydration Guide

Yoga traditions often advise against drinking much water during practice, while modern fitness advice says “stay hydrated”. Both have a point. Here’s a practical way to think about hydration around your yoga practice.

Quick takeaways

  • Hydrate well in the hours before practice, not just in the last five minutes.
  • During gentle practice, small sips when you need them are fine. Big gulps can feel uncomfortable in twists and inversions.
  • Hot yoga or vigorous vinyasa needs more water, before, during and after.
  • Rehydrate steadily after class, especially in Indian summers.

Before yoga

Aim to arrive on your mat hydrated but not full. A glass or two of water an hour or more before class works for most people. A full stomach of water can make forward folds, twists and inversions uncomfortable. For early-morning practice, a glass of warm water on waking, then practice 20–30 minutes later, is a common approach.

During yoga

For gentle hatha or yin practice, many people need little or no water during a one-hour class. For power yoga, vinyasa or hot yoga, where sweating is heavy, small sips between sequences help. Listen to your body: if you’re thirsty, dizzy or overheating, drink and rest.

Keep water beside your mat, not across the room. A tumbler with a straw and a closable lid lets you take a quick sip without breaking your flow, and the closed lid helps prevent spills on the mat.

After yoga

Rehydrate gradually over the next hour. Room-temperature or cool water both work. After hot yoga or a sweaty session in summer, consider coconut water or an electrolyte drink as well.

Hot yoga: a special case

In a heated room you can lose a lot of fluid. Start well hydrated, keep a full tumbler of cold water beside you, and replace fluids afterwards. An insulated tumbler such as the Miora Ember keeps water cold for 11 hours, even in a hot studio.

Warm water or cold?

Many practitioners prefer warm water in the morning and cool water after a vigorous session. An insulated tumbler keeps either: warm for up to 7 hours, cold for up to 11. Read more on warm water in the morning.
